Scott Atwood's Homepage

My old homepage is painfully out of date, so this page is a placeholder until I get around to making a more up to date homepage.

I maintain an album of personal photographs.

I am a happy employee of PayPal. We are currently hiring.

I am a former member of The Academy of Danse Libre, a dance performing group specializing in reconstructions of social dances of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and a former member of the Stanford Vintage Dance Ensemble.

My wife is Karen Gee, also a dancer, and a member of Decadance. She has started grad school at San José State to earn her Master's degree in psychology. We were married on August 7th, 2005 at the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden.

I am co-editor with Rob Starling of Issues With Stuff, a blog on progressive politics. I'm also co-editor of Chrstian's and Scott's Interactive Top Ten List, a humor site Christian Shelton and I have been running continuously since 1994.

I have written a little script called rcsvi, which makes it very easy to keep files under source control. As long as perl and RCS are installed on your system, just put this script in your path. The just use rcsvi to edit your files. It will automatically check the files out before editing, and check them back in when you are done. It will determine your favorite editor from your evironment variables, falling back on vi if no other editor was specified.

My interests include social dancing, especially waltz, Argentine tango, and hustle, photography, linguistics, languages, typography, progressive politics, civil liberties, travel, cycling for transportation, exercise, sport, and fun, computers, and cinema.

I am an avid cyclist. I enjoy riding my bike to work on a semi-regular basis. Last year I participated in the Sequoia Century in the San Fracisco Bay Area, the Seattle to Portland Classic where are rode my first to bicycle centuries back to back, and the New York City Century Bike Tour. This year wedding planning and travel have curtailed my cycling plans a bit so the only event ride I've participated in was the Sequoia Century. Next year I am tenatively planning a one week bike tour of the Oregon coast.

My email inbox is protected from spam by the excellent bogofilter, a Bayesian spam filter. After training and tuning, I have gotten very few false negatives and no false positives. This is the best performance I've seen in a spam filter since spam became a problem for me. I highly recommend it for anyone with a spam problem with the technical infrastructure to run, and the patience to properly train and tune it.

The world is facing a crisis of unprecendented proportions: the end of cheap oil.

I am a proponent of election reform.
